SMART-TRIAL allows you to upload images to your electronic case report form (eCRF). The form builder offers a fast and easy setup of both visit-forms and questionnaires - Learn how to design better eCRFs

As a standard, you can choose up to 15 different question types to collect clinical relevant data. But there is one type that often deserves more attention than others.

In this post, we’ll guide you through the 'Image as an answer' feature and the benefits of using it.

What is image as an answer?

'Image as an answer' is one of the question types you can use in your SMART-TRIAL forms. The question type, allows people to upload images as answers when filling it out.

This enables you to include more comprehensive data from both subjects and participants.

How to use image as an answer in your eCRF or questionnaire

When creating a SMART-TRIAL form, you have to specify at least one question. From the 'Create Form' view, click the “Add new question” button and select “Image as an answer” as the question type.

Specify a question text and save the form - voilà! Users can now submit photos to your form with a simple click.

Why did we develop this feature?

Originally, this feature was made available in SMART-TRIAL version 2.3 - after multiple requests from users, because sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.

Including pictures in an eCRF or other outcome forms (eCOA or ePRO) can broaden the scope of your results. Besides, it can increase clinical quality, and serve as an important tool to explain data.

For example, if you need to review the healing progression of a wound, you can ask subjects to submit images.

Collecting data isn’t complex. Anyone can collect data. But collecting the right data efficiently, can be a tricky task.
